Description:: Thir, 1920, p. 562 states for house no. 236: "...finally in 1867 Bedřich Gause bought the house, Marie with the bastion, for 2,800 guilders, but without the stable, which was sold to Václ. Borovička. Aloisie. The present owner is Augustin Gause. (Since 1915 daughters Anna, Marie, Božena.)"

The Gause houses were built before the middle of the 19th century at the very edge of the town. One side stood by the Prague Gate and the side of the houses was connected to a fortification bastion. After the gate was demolished, the houses were extended toward Pražská Street by a richly decorated extension with shops and a pharmacy (in the right part of the photograph). After demolition in 1934, only the fortification bastion remained. In 1938 it became part of a new house that today contains the Bastion second-hand bookshop.
