Description:
The photograph was probably taken on the occasion of the unveiling of the monument.

The fountain dating from 1567 and the water standpipe on Tábor’s main square attest to the municipality’s and residents’ centuries-long efforts to secure water, which in the town center – because of its position on a high promontory above the Lužnice River and Tismenice Stream – could not be obtained in the usual way, for example by digging wells down to groundwater. In the earliest times this was replaced by digging wells for surface water (so-called cisterns) or by establishing fire-fighting and storage reservoirs. From the end of the 15th century, the newly built Jordán supplied water to the town; from there the water crossed the walls, overcoming a height difference of 32 m, to the water tower and from there to seven above-ground fountains. The remains of water-supply piping, in the form of drilled wooden pipes joined with iron band collars, testify to the distribution of water through the town in subsequent periods.
